tomh Posted February 29, 2012 Report Posted February 29, 2012 (edited) Great forum guys  Here is how my first day of Galaxy ownership ended, http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/417038_3047538302480_1083840192_32454592_549817613_n.jpg Its a 2001 (Y) MK2 Ghia 1.9tdi. All seemed fine then driving home on the motorway I noticed the temp guage creeping up and then in no time into the red and the 'stop' light appeared. Checked the fluids and all seemed fine. Drove off and once again back into the red ;). There is no heat at all coming through the vents even with the setting on hi. Recovery guy seems to think it maybe the water pump ( something todo with a plastic impellor ? ) but also told it could be head gasket ( but there is no oil in the water etc ) Is there anything obvious to check as ive had it running outside the house for ages but will not go past half way on the temp sensor it seems to be when im driving. Please help  Thanks Edited February 29, 2012 by tomh Quote
NikpV Posted February 29, 2012 Report Posted February 29, 2012 water pump impellor off its shaft - classic symptoms - removing the thermostat allows access to pump imellor to see if its spinning or firmly attached to shaft - overheating may have warped head but you may be lucky ;) Quote
tomh Posted February 29, 2012 Author Report Posted February 29, 2012 thanks for the reply, is that a big job ? Quote
NikpV Posted February 29, 2012 Report Posted February 29, 2012 thanks for the reply, is that a big job ? what the water pump - extra Quote
tomh Posted February 29, 2012 Author Report Posted February 29, 2012 Yeah just looking online. Seems on searching more here could be a number of things ( thermostat, waterpump, heat matrix, block pipe ) Anyone in the Northwest up for a challenge lol ;) Quote
chrispb123456 Posted March 1, 2012 Report Posted March 1, 2012 As said water pump is your first check, you can get to the back of the pump by removing thermostat housing (two bolts on bottom hose flange, impeller could be broken up, spinning on shaft or detached from shaft.Water pump replacement will involve removing timing belt so consider replacement of belt and idler/tensioner.There is also an electric circulating pump which assists circulation located behind the fuel filter, it should run all the time engines running and continue for 3 minutes after switch off. tomh Posted March 1, 2012 Author Report Posted March 1, 2012 thanks chris, would you be able to hear the electric circulation pump running after switch off ? as ive not heard anything when ive switched the engine off ? Quote
chrispb123456 Posted March 1, 2012 Report Posted March 1, 2012 (edited) Usually can be heard, or giving it a prod or poke sometimes activates it for a short time, they suffer with the brushes wearing out usually around the 90000 ml mark, it's primarily there to prevent heat build up when engines switched off but also assists flow through the rear compartment heater and correct operation of the diesel fired booster heater under the N/S/R passenger floor area. There's lots of info already on here about all these problems, use the search function (above right) and the FAQ's in the technical section. Not a very good start to your galaxy experience, these engines develop these faults and can go on unnoticed until motorway driving and more loads imposed on the engine,Don't be put off these are good cars, blame the previous owner for not sorting problems as they occured, now you have a shopping list of faults to put right. If you bought from a garage get straight back on to them as this could be expensive. tomh Posted March 2, 2012 Author Report Posted March 2, 2012 Heard the auto pump running when I switched the engine of so that's ok ( something I suppose lol ) noticed a pipe that runs along the bottom of the radiator is hot (ish) to a point then cold the rest of the way. Thinking start with thermostat and water pump. Offer is still open to anyone in the northwest lol :) Quote
